Epicondylitis, more commonly known as tennis elbow, often affects players of tennis and other racket sports(even golf). However, anyone who repeatedly makes the same motion with their arms all day can develop it. Tennis is just the perfect example because of the repetitive, forceful swinging you do that puts pressure on the elbow. Those sorts of motions seriously work your forearms, potentially causing tears in the tendons that connect those muscles to the bony outer edge of your elbow, or lateral epicondyle, causing elbow pain. So for the layman, epicondylitis roughly translates to a boo-boo on your elbow. Don’t confuse it with tendinitis or carpal tunnel. As with pretty much all overuse injuries, treatment consists largely of resting the affected area and patience. If possible, you should try and modify your activities to avoid the problematic movement, but we all know that life doesn’t always let you make such accommodations. At the very least, physical therapy should be integrated in your care plan to get your musculature back up to par.Risk Factors
Do your best to avoid tennis elbow. Interestingly, over three years at the French Open, only one case of epicondylitis was reported out of 700+ professional players. So what does that tell you? It’s not what you do, but how you do it. Have good form, good gear, and keep your muscles and bones strong and healthy; they’ll be much better prepared for the stress you throw their way. If your job is physically demanding, you really want to make sure you’re working in an ergonomically sound environment to minimize chances for injury.
Identify the cause of your tennis elbow. You can’t fix your behavior to reduce your symptoms if you don’t know where they’re coming from. Obviously harsh, forceful arm movements, like in tennis, can irritate your elbow, but constant twisting of your wrist does it, too. So people who work with their hands, like butchers, carpenters, and plumbers, are all at risk. Even a job requiring the constant use of a computer can be a contributing factor to tennis elbow, particularly in your mouse hand. After identifying the troublesome motion, make sure you’re performing it in such a way that reduces stress on your arm.
Home remedies may not fix the problem, but they can reduce pain and symptoms. My usual go-to advice for any injury: R.I.C.E. Rest, ice, compression, elevation. Do it. It’ll help reduce inflammation and pain. They’re pretty self-explanatory, just be careful with your icing. You go overboard with it and you might damage your nerves. Ice for around twenty minutes at a time a few times a day and be sure to wrap your ice in a washcloth or something before slapping it on your arm. Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds (like Aleve, which Amazon sells) will relieve some pain for you, too.
Physical therapy will get your muscles back in shape after your injury. A certified physical therapist can teach you exercises to strengthen your injured muscle groups and show you the proper form for whatever activity caused your tennis elbow, reducing your chances for re-injury. Your doctor can set you up with formal physical therapy, and you should definitely take his or her advice over mine, but I’ve listed some exercises that may be helpful in the sidebar. Different tendons are affected depending on the injury, so there may be some trial and error in finding exercises that work for you.
When in doubt and in pain, head to your doctor. For most cases, all you really need is patience and maybe some of the above tennis elbow treatments, but persistent cases should be checked out by a medical professional. Doctors can provide that PT prescription, the right kind of brace to support your arm, and cortisone injections, and they’ll just generally give you the best advice for your specific injury. If you go through all of these treatments without much improvement, surgical repair of your messed-up tissue might be recommended. Getting professional advice will help a lot.
Formal treatment by a doctor or physical therapist may not be necessary for some cases of tennis elbow, but that’s only if your symptoms are mild and you’re sure you have tennis elbow, not something more serious. Symptoms include elbow pain that gets worse as you continue to use the arm, forearm and/or wrist pain, and loss of grasp strength. Tendinitis is a similar injury to tennis elbow, the main difference being the level of inflammation in the tendons, and it will respond to similar treatment. You can try home treatment for mild tendinitis as well, but if you suspect any kind of a break anywhere in your arm, or even an all-out tear of something, you should definitely go in and get some imaging done. Don’t mess around with bony injuries; the sooner they get treatment, the better. Knowing when to go in isn’t always easy, and if you’re not sure, it’s best to just bite the bullet and head in.Related Articles: Are there any articles you'd like to see?

The elbow injuries are quite common amongst people who play outdoors sports – like tennis or golf, for example. In order to avoid these injuries, it’s essential to take some preventive measures, and that means wearing an elbow brace. It can keep your elbow healthy and efficient for a long time, minimizing the risk of a serious injury and lowering the chance of getting tendonitis.
Choosing the right elbow brace requires extensive search, and that can be a real chore to someone who doesn’t know a lot about these things. But, have no worries – that’s what our reviews of the best elbow braces are here for!Top Rated Products on the Market Sleeve Stars – Best Elbow Brace With Compression Pad
The first tennis elbow brace we’re going to take a look at is made by Sleeve Stars, which is a USA company founded by a brother and sister who originate from Sweden. Their products are well-known to all tennis enthusiasts, which is exactly why we think that their new elbow brace deserves a more in-depth look.
One of the first things to notice here is the quality of the material. This model offers some good durability, as it is manufactured from neoprene (75%) and nylon (25%), which prevents it from wearing out. During our testing period, we haven’t noticed any of the usual wear & tear – and that’s always a big plus in our book. As the name suggests, one of the main selling points here is the compression pad. It is designed to apply pressure on your forearm and thus helps it recover from fatigue and injuries. It also protects the tendons (which are quite vulnerable) from any further strain. If you’re suffering from tendonitis, arthritis, or the carpal tunnel syndrome, this elbow brace is an excellent choice.
When it comes to design, we have only words of praise. The model features two Velcro straps, which are fully adjustable and can be attached anywhere on the brace. The grip is secure enough and allows you to wear the brace on both your left and right forearm. The material is very flexible and also breathable, and its texture does not restrict the necessary hand movement while you’re playing tennis. It fits forearms from 7 to 13 inches and can be worn by both men and women.
As far as we’re concerned, this is one of the best tennis elbow braces currently on the market. It offers quality and flexibility, and we have to give it our recommendation.SIMIEN – Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow Pain Relief
A bit pricier than the Sleeve Star’s model, the SIMIEN Tennis Elbow Brice also brings more quality and an incredible value for the money. SIMIEN is a company well-known for their tennis braces, which is exactly why we decided to test the newest model out and find out the reason behind its immense popularity.
We were very pleased with the quality of the material here – the SIMIEN elbow brace is made out of nylon (35%) and neoprene (65%), and feels very comfortable on the forearm. We’ve noticed no wear & tear during the testing period – and that’s exactly what we expected from a product made by such a reputable company. One of the best things here is that the model can also be used for basketball, golf, fishing, pool, and even for PC gaming. You can also use it if you’re a weightlifter or a rower – in shorter words, if you’re involved in any activity that results in elbow hyperextension. The model comes with a compression pad that, in our opinion, works far better than your standard air pads.
The brace is also very versatile, as one size can fit most people and can be used by both men and women. It fits both left and right forearm, as it has an adjustable strap that’s easy to stretch and use however you require it. The box also includes a nice sweat wristband, as well as the E-book that addresses the tennis elbow pain and instructs you how to properly use the product. It also includes some online resources like therapies and exercises for the people suffering from tendonitis and similar issues.
When it comes to joint pain relief, we think that the SIMIEN’s model is a great choice. It’s a quality brace made out of good material and offers enough flexibility – we recommend it!Tomight Tennis Elbow Brace
Next up is Tomight Tennis Elbow Brace, one of the best-selling products of this kind and a highly popular brace amongst tennis enthusiasts. Featuring a beautiful black & blue design and a versatile functionality, this model is something that certainly deserves to be tested out – so, let’s do it!
Just like many other tennis elbow braces, this one also features a thoughtful design that’s supposed to bring comfort when you wear it. It is equipped with two improved Velcro straps that are fully adjustable, allowing the user to tighten or loosen the brace to his or hers comfort level. The brace is reinforced with neoprene, which makes it skin-friendly and prevents the risk of getting your skin cut or rubbed. We really liked how well-done the stitching and the seam work are. The same goes for the included compression pad – it is made to fill the whole area under your elbow, and feels quite comfortable.
The primary purpose of the Tomight Tennis Elbow Brace is to relieve the pain and to prevent the injuries that occur in sports such as tennis. The way in which the brace does that is by compressing your upper forearm, thus absorbing the forces that come through the soft tissues. During our testing period, all of this proved true – the brace works exactly as advertised. In our opinion, it’s a must-have accessory for people who are in risk of tendonitis – like the tennis players, golfers, bowlers, baseball players, mechanics, carpenters, assembly-line workers and others. Along with two braces, you’re also getting a useful user manual with the necessary instructions.
With a comfortable compression pad, great fit and design, the Tomight Tennis Elbow Brace is surely a model worth considering for purchase. It’s no wonder that it’s among the company’s best sellers!PlayActive 2-Pack
PlayActive’s attempt at creating a quality elbow brace is a successful one, as far as we’re concerned. This affordable model is very easy to use, has a premium construction, and offers immediate pain relief. However, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t deserve a more in-depth look – let’s see what its main features are!
Like we mentioned, the construction of this brace is excellent – it’s made out of nylon (35%) and neoprene (65%), which guarantees superior durability and reduces the chances of wear & tear. Its compression pad is firm enough to give your elbows an adequate support, but still soft enough to offer the necessary comfort. We liked how easy it is to adjust the brace, with the loop fastener straps sticking anywhere on the model’s surface. This will allow you to put it on and take it off quickly and easily, which just might be the thing you’re searching for.
Whether you’re suffering from Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer’s elbow) or Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow), wearing the PlayActive 2-Pack is a great way to remove the pain. As the name suggests, the package includes two elbow braces, as well as two extra straps, a digital E-Guide, and the necessary user manual. The E-Guide provides instructions on how to use the braces and gives some tips in dealing with pain. We also liked that the manufacturer offers 100% money return guarantee.
The PlayActive 2-Pack elbow braces provide superior quality and great adjustability, which is exactly what people suffering from tendonitis are looking for. They come with comfortable compression pads, the two-strap design, and also some useful accessories in the box – what more could one want?WITKEEN Elbow Brace with Compression Pad

Here are the different types of tennis elbow braces that you can buy today, along with the description of what they do and how they work. The epicondylitis clasp
These kinds of tennis elbow braces have to be fitted right in order to be effective. Their plastic slips are fitted around the users’ arms and secured with the included straps. These kinds of braces are also the most affordable ones, and also the ones that are highly recommended to novices. The tennis elbow sleeve
A tennis elbow sleeve has two primary parts – a strap, and an elbow sleeve. These provide warmth and support by compression that involves the entirety of the user’s elbow.
