BBC SPORT, TENNIS, Federer claims first ATP title

With a round-up of the action

Switzerland's Roger Federer won his first ATP title by beating Frenchman Julien Boutter in the Milan Indoor final.

The 19-year-old is one of the up-and-coming stars on the men's tennis scene and won the first set with ease before his opponent found form in the second set.

Both players broke serve twice and unseeded Boutter, playing in his first final at 26, won the tiebreak 9-7.

But Boutter's serve, the key to his semi-final victory over Greg Rusedski, let him down in the opening game of the deciding set and he never recovered against Federer's forceful baseline play to lose 6-4 6-7 6-4.

I can look forward to the rest of the season with a little of that pressure to win off my shoulders

"My next goal is to break into the top 15, which is a high aim but not an impossible one".

Federer, who defeated second seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the semi-final, was playing in his third final after losing last year to compatriot Marc Rosset in Marseille and in Basle to Thomas Enqvist of Sweden.

Questionable line calls

"To lose three finals in a row would have been a little uncomfortable mentally.

"But now I can look forward to the rest of the season with a little of that pressure to win an event off my shoulders," said Federer, ranked 29th at the end of 2000.

Boutter by contrast looked back on some questionable line calls.

"I found the umpiring pretty bad and that is the first time I have said something like that in public - there were too many mistakes for both sides."

But the Frenchman, who ended 2000 ranked number 87 in the world, was keen to reflect on the positive aspects of his week in Italy.

"I feel good and this has probably been the best week in my life. It would be a big mistake to be disappointed."

ATP Tennis Results: Federer Beats Ferrer Again to Reach Semi-Finals: US: Sports World Report

atp tennis results federer

(Reuters) - Defending champion Roger Federer guaranteed his place in the last four of the ATP World Tour Finals with a straight-sets win over Spain's David Ferrer on Thursday.

The Swiss world number two, bidding for a record-extending seventh title at the end-of-season finale, dished out yet more punishment to Ferrer in a 6-4 7-6 victory at the O2, taking his career record over the tenacious Spaniard to 14-0.

Federer took a while to settle into his smooth rhythm, though, and Ferrer, who beat Juan Martin del Potro in his opening match, had numerous opportunities to make inroads in the opening games of their Group B clash.

Ferrer was 0-40 ahead on Federer's opening service game but having failed to capitalize he was immediately broken himself.

He squandered more break points in the next game as Federer found himself 3-0 up without even playing well.

Ferrer, who has a season-leading 73 match wins this year, could have been forgiven for feeling pessimistic about his prospects but he was finally rewarded for his endeavor with a break in the fifth game when Federer wafted a backhand wide.

Having hauled himself back on level terms, however, Ferrer wavered at 4-5, allowing Federer to take the opening set.

Ferrer, darting around the court in his fluorescent lime green top, hung on to Federer's coat tails in the second set to extend the Swiss maestro into a tiebreak.

Federer's serve then clicked into gear after something of an off day and he marched into a 6-3 lead.

Still Ferrer refused to accept the inevitable, saving two match points, but there was no escape as Federer clinched his place in the semi-finals with one round-robin match to spare.

"I'm extremely happy, it's a tough match. David's been on a great run, winning in Paris was so deserving," Federer said on court. "It was a long match and I'm extremely happy.

"Ferrer is so respected by the fellow competitors. I enjoy playing against him, not because the 14-0 record but because he's a great guy and a great competitor."

Ferrer's fate will be decided in the final round of group matches on Saturday when he faces Janko Tipsarevic.

Should he win that and then go on to reach the final he would replace compatriot Rafa Nadal as world number four.

Federer has now won his last 12 matches at the ATP World Tour Finals since losing to Nikolay Davydenko in the 2009 semi-finals when the tournament made its debut at the spectacular O2 Arena.

With two comfortable wins this year few would bet against him finishing his year on a high by clinching a hat-trick of titles here.

In the later Group B match, Tipsarevic faces Juan Martin del Potro with both players seeking a first win.

ATP BRISBANE: Federer and Raonic will play for the title again

ATP BRISBANE: Federer and Raonic will play for the title again

Tennis - Both players scored straight sets wins, but Roger´s one was much easier

In the repeat of 2015 final, it will be Milos Raonic and Roger Federer fighting for the title in Brisbane this year too. Milos toppled Bernard Tomic in 2 tie breaks, while Roger had no troubles against Dominic Thiem, playing with young Austrian for the first time.

Milos saved 4 break points against Bernard in 5th game of the first set, and Tomic also saved two in game 8, but that were the only bigger troubles both players faced on serve, not able to do more on return. In both tie breaks Milos had huge 5-1 lead but persistent Tomic managed to be back at 5-5, only to lose next two points in each of the sets.

Roger Federer will play in his 3rd straight Brisbane final and 136th ATP final overall, after convincing 6-1 6-4 win over Dominic Thiem. Match lasted only 60 minutes, as Austrian youngster couldn't find the way to deal with Roger's strong and aggressive pace.

Roger broke in very first return game, and again after that, for 5-0 lead before Dominic get his name on the scoreboard. In the end it was 6-1, as Federer punished almost every second serve from Thiem. Talented Austrian played some better tennis in second set, breaking Roger in second game to level the score, after losing his serve once again in game before.

Still, world number 3 made decisive move in game 7, breaking at 15, to finish the match on his own serve 3 games later. They had the same percentage of first serves in, but Roger used it much better, also winning more than half points on return for the easy day at the office.
