Football is clearly the number one sport in Uganda and the most popular pastime for young people. The game attracts fans of all ages and is played in cities, villages, universities and schools across the country. Balls in Ugandaare often not made out of leather, but from interwoven banana leaves. Many top Ugandan players began their careers kicking such a football. But the national team has not enjoyed success for many years now. In 1978, the national team (the Cranes) reached the Final of the African Cup of Nations, only to lose to hosts Ghana, while they have appeared in three other African Cups of Nations (1962, 1968, 1974). Uganda were one of the founding members of the Confederation of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), and have won the CECAFA Championship on five occasions. Unfortunately, the country has suffered from political unrest and border disputes, which has evidently affected sport in Uganda. However, the country is finding its feet again and youth development work promises much for the future. The Ugandan U-14s are the reigning champions of two prestigious European youth tournaments, the Tivoli Cup and the Gothia Cup, while a number of school teams have also successfully represented Uganda at other international tournaments. The national association has a close working relationship with the German FA and many Ugandan coaches have earned the German «B coaches licence».

Football – International – Africa Cup of Nations Betting Tips
Group D of the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on Tuesday evening with highly fancied Ghana starting their campaign against Uganda as Ghana look to break their current average run of form.
Ghana have been without a win from their last five matches overall which includes defeats away at Russia 1-0 and Egypt away from home 2-0 along with draws against Rwanda, tonight’s opponents Uganda and South Africa, while it’s interesting to note that very few goals have been scored in their last 14 matches overall.
Only two matches from the last 14 have resulted in over 2.5 goals where Ghana are concerned, while against tonight’s opponents Uganda, five of the last six meetings between the two teams have been under 2.5 goals in total.
Uganda’s latest three friendly internationals resulted in a 3-1 win away at Slovakia, but this victory was sandwiched between defeats to Tunisia 2-0 and Ivory Coast 3-0 (which were both away from home), but prior to the losses, the general theme for Uganda was also low-scoring encounters.
Just three of Uganda’s last 20 matches went over the 2.5 goal mark, and I’m expecting them to tighten up for this year’s tournament, as they’ll especially be keen to avoid defeat in this opening Group D encounter.
This will be Uganda’s first appearance in the Africa Cup of Nations, but I’m expecting them to keep pace with Ghana here in what could be a rather cagey affair in Port-Gentil with neither side wanting to taste defeat early on, which could hand the initiative over to Mali and Egypt.

Egypt remain Africa's highest-ranked side in the latest edition of the FIFA world rankings, released on Thursday, while Nigeria and Ghana have dropped one place each.
The Pharaohs were defeated in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in February, but are the only one of the continent's nations to find themselves in the world's top 25 teams, dropping four places to 24th.
They're followed by non-movers Senegal, who remain 27th in the overall standings, one ahead of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Leopards are Africa's biggest climbers inside the continent's top 15 teams, moving 11 places in the overall standings to take 28th place.
Florent Ibenge led his side to triumphs over Botswana and neighbours the Republic of Congo in June, although they face a stern test in September when they meet Tunisia in a Nations Cup qualifying double-header.
Africa's champions Cameroon -- 36th overall -- complete the continent's top five, ahead of Nigeria, who drop one place after their defeat by South Africa, Burkina Faso, Algeria and Ghana.
The Ivory Coast's miserable start to life under Marc Wilmots came at a cost after defeats by the Netherlands and Guinea see them drop nine places overall.
While Mauritania and Sierra Leone are Africa's big climbers, moving up 23 and 30 places respectively, their progress comes in stark contrast to Namibia. The Brave Warriors' 62-place drop makes them the world's biggest fallers last month.
