Best Bets of the Weekend: Belmont Longshot, Saturday Stakes Picks

America’s Best Racing and handicapper (and avid gambler) Monique Vág team up to provide horseplayers with their best bets of the weekend in a regular feature blog that will run on Fridays.

For some posts, Vág will try to identify a longshot play of the weekend, a nice opportunity to swing for the fences on a win bet or to take a shot with a show bet. She also will look for strong exacta plays for the weekend or occasionally try to spot a nice opportunity for other wagers.

#3 Queen Bernardina: After a great performance breaking her maiden going a mile last year at Churchill Downs, connections chose to enter her immediately into a Grade 1 race where she was bet down to 5-1. She's struggled mightily since then but I think that's partly due to the much tougher competition she's been facing as well as not excelling at distances of a mile or more. I think she will certainly appreciate the return to racing against restricted fillies and mares and could work out a nice stalking trip relaxing off of quick fractions.

#9 City Day: She is very well bred on both sides of her pedigree and I expect her to find success racing over the turf. She was heavily bet in her debut which was initially scheduled to be a turf race, but was taken off. It's usually safe to assume being given Lasix (furosemide) for the first time she may put forth a big effort. I anticipate her to break somewhere mid-pack and make her move on the front-runners late.

Arlington Park, Race 6, $65,000 Richard Scherer Memorial Stakes, 4:07 p.m. ET

#5 Puntsville: You can't ignore how she's excelled over the all-weather surface and how she's found success against stakes competition. She has shown some nice early gate speed, however I think she's more than content in a stalking position if the pace or a bad break dictate otherwise. There are quite a few front-running horses but I can't particularly envision a speed duel up front hurting her chances. She looks much the best.

#4 La Coronel: She definitely disappointed in her last start – she was never a factor and faded late; however I think there's something to be said about racing over a turf course not listed as "firm." I expect her to improve today as she returns to facing mostly easier and perhaps a jockey change could help bring her back to her winning ways. She should be a good price as she meets a very tough field.

16/9/2017 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Belmont

WA Racing this Saturday continues at Belmont for an eight race card. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race 1. (15:23) Perth Racing Young Membership Handicap (78+) 1200m

Great to see 4 Whispering Brook (Bet Now: $2.05) back at the races after nearly 12 months in the paddock. She is one of the stars of WA racing who ran a couple of crackers during the Melbourne Spring of last year, highlighted by her third to Global Glamour in the Thousand Guineas. Looked outstanding in a recent trial win and she’s ready to go.

1 Gigante (Bet Now: $3.90) had really good market support when resuming over 1000m here last Saturday and he landed some nice bets, aided by a lovely ride near the pace by Tayla Stone, who had the gelding just parked off the speed before getting clear and grabbing the win late. Like that he is backing up, maps well and has the fitness edge.

2 Rebel King (Bet Now: $7.50) is another quality galloper, this one first up for the Mcauliffe team. He had a mixed Summer/Autumn prep, though he did win the feature sprint race on Mount Barker Cup Day. Sharp trial win in mid August and Pike sticks. The big, big negative is that the bar plates are on.

Race 2. (16:03) James Boags Premium Maiden 1200m

14 Heir And There (Bet Now: $6.50) on top in a race I ave no confidence in. Hasn’t raced for 194 days since racing at York where she was hard in the market but put in a howler when dropping out, but she was later found to have pulled up lame. Interesting she resumes with no trials, but the push is that Pike is on.

13 Bellflower (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Bob McPherson trained mare in good form at the moment. Her two runs back from a spell have been quite encouraging, the latest coming a fortnight back at this track/distance when a close up third to the above average Kia Ora Star. That form should hold up okay for this.

8 Oakhurst Power (Bet Now: $35.00) is a Henny Hughes gelding on debut here. This four year old has trialled in readiness for his first day at the races, both at Lark Hill. The latest came on Monday where he looked to go about his business quite nicely in running third. Draws the inside marble and this race has no depth.

Race 3. (16:43) Perth Racing Club Membership Handicap (72+) 1400m

Buttering up on 1 Pinzu (Bet Now: $4.00). Know he is being set for the Hannans Handicap during the Kalgoorlie Carnival but I think he can win here. was really keen on him a fortnight back but he let me down badly with a poor effort from the back when fifth to Flying Roar. I think he can produce the third up bounce back.

7 Bonny Be Good (Bet Now: $5.00) was an impressive first up winner over 1200m here before racing at the same track/distance three weeks back and putting in a howler it would seem behind Lockroy, with no real excuses. She can race a touch flat second up though and goes much better third up. Give her another chance.

5 Juicing Carrots (Bet Now: $9.00) was absolutely awful when resuming here a fortnight back. Sat back off the speed under Pateman and when he asked for the big effort, there was nothing and he eased him up late. Stack of gear changes to sharpen him up and he looked good in a trial on Monday.

Race 4. (17:20) Schweppes Plate 1400m

4 State Prosecutor (Bet Now: $2.80) is a very promising gelding for Team Williams who resumed over 1300m here a tick over two weeks back and aided by a confident steer from Pike, the three year burst home and won with a bit in reserve from the looks of it. Good test here, but I am confident he can measure up.

1 Athlete (Bet Now: $5.00) resumed at the same meeting mentioned above over the same trip but in 0MW for the three year olds and I thought he did quite a good job to get the win. He sat back off a slow tempo and looked in a bit of trouble but once he got wide and balanced up, I like the way he found to get the win. He can win again for sure.

9 The Big Show (Bet Now: $17.00) lived up to his namesake on debut. He was expected to do good things, the fans/market suggested he would but he let them down with a battling seventh of eight in the race won by Athlete. I will say he didn’t appear overly suited by the tempo either. That is a query here also, but the market support was too strong to ignore.

Race 5. (17:55) Devil's Lair Plate 1000m

3 Saturia (Bet Now: $2.60) for me here. This girl debuted here with a strong win over the above average Epic Grey on August 12 before a 21 day break and racing here again alongside Epic Grey but that horse turned the tables, albeit narrowly. She maps well here, should lead and take some beating.

4 Arrum Boy (Bet Now: $10.00) is a six start maiden for the Steve Wolfe yard but his efforts are better than that of a maiden horse. He ran fourth in that Epic Grey race mentioned above and I thought his effort was very good from the back, closing off with real purpose. He will get a hot speed in front him again and get every chance to ambush.

8 Misty Metal (Bet Now: $12.00) is a Team Harvey trained filly who was a drifter in betting when making her debut over 1100m at Northam but she defied that with a dominant on speed win by Skye Bogenhuber and did it without really being fully felt for. Tricky gate here is the query, but plenty to like about the debut win.

Race 6. (18:25) D'Orsogna Handicap (1MW) 1200m

1 Atlanta Blue (Bet Now: $3.30) on top. Jason Pateman trained five year old in really good form at the moment. He ran over this track/distance a fortnight back and loomed large to win when he eventually got clear but just missed. Could make a case he should have won. Keen on him here to bounce back.

6 Multiverse (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Gary Crispin trained gelding who is two for two this time in, both at this track/distance. The latest came last Wednesday where he was given a sweet ride by Whiting and he let down hard when asked for the big effort and drew right away for a dominant win. He can measure up here.

3 On Trend (Bet Now: $6.00) is another that comes through that race mentioned above, won by Roltana Beach. On Trend was first up and he too was another unlucky runner. Never really clear at any stage despite having plenty to offer. Won’t get in a pocket here with the wide gate and rates highly for mine.

Race 7. (19:00) Ascot Racing Carnival Handicap (1MW) 1600m

6 Golgotha (Bet Now: $5.50) is a Lindsey Smith trained gelding in ripping form in recent times. Broke the maiden two back over 1500m at Pinjarra before racing at this track/distance last Wednesday where he was confidently ridden by Smith, leading all the way and in the end he was dominant. He can continue the picket fence.

2 Battle Torque (Bet Now: $6.50) is an Adam Durrant trained gelding who should prove hard to beat. He ran at this track/distance a couple of Wednesdays back and it was a tough watch if you were on. He was blocked for most of the straight when appearing to be bolting and should have finished much closer. Pike on, he can bounce back hard.

4 Sonnen (Bet Now: $7.50) is a bit of a non winner for the Stephen Miller yard but he is racing so well. Just needs to crack it for a win. Looked as if he’d win a fortnight back here but he ended up being bloused late by Witness In Court. Gets the claim for Tan again and if they overdo it in front, he’s the one.

Race 8. (19:35) Get The Tabtouch Handicap (66+) 2000m

9 Romelo (Bet Now: $5.50) is a horse I’m giving one more chance to. He comes through the Apprentices Cup last time out where Johnston-Porter gave him a perfect ride off the pace and once he hit the front, it was game over, but he ended up being bloused late by Elegant Blast. Pike on, clear running, cover…yes…please.

1 Jetoomy (Bet Now: $4.60) was huge here a fortnight back at the track/distance. Was wide no cover throughout yet still had the audacity to loom up and hit the front, only to be bloused late by Danehills Daughter in a thrilling finish. Draws much better here and gets weight relief after the claim. Rates highly.

8 Let’s Twist (Bet Now: $9.50) is a Team Pearce trained mare who won well two back at the midweeks before racing at this track/distance two weeks ago where she got slightly held up when building momentum and that just took the wind out of her sails behind Danehills Daughter. I think if she can build full momentum, she’s a threat here.

Belmont Stakes Betting, Bet on the Belmont Online

Belmont Stakes

It’s the oldest race and the longest race in America’s Triple Crown of thoroughbred racing – and the most difficult to win.

The first Belmont Stakes were run not at Belmont Park, but at Jerome Park Racetrack in 1867. Jerome Park was built in 1866 and financed by August Belmont, a wealthy businessman and politician who was also a noted horse lover.

The first Belmont Stakes were won by a filly named Ruthless, who beat De Courcey by a head to claim a purse of $1,850, or about $31,000 in today’s terms. Only two other fillies have won the Belmont: Tanya in 1905 and Rags to Riches in 2007.

The Belmont Stakes continued to be held at Jerome Park until 1890, when they moved to the new Morris Park Racecourse (which also held the Preakness that year) as the old facility was closed to allow construction of the Jerome Park Reservoir. Morris Park was a gem when it first opened, but after founder John Morris died in 1895, the resulting lack of attendance by New York high society led to its demise.

Cue the hero music. Belmont’s son, August Belmont Jr, arranged for the construction of Belmont Park in 1905 in part to reclaim his father’s legacy. Time magazine lauded the younger Belmont in his obituary as the man who “saved thoroughbred racing” on the East Coast. Belmont was also a noted horse owner and breeder – three of his own horses won the Belmont Stakes: Masterman (1902), Friar Rock (1916) and Hourless (1917).

Belmont was also the breeder behind the greatest thoroughbred that ever lived. His top horse was Man o’ War, named by Belmont’s wife Eleanor in tribute to her husband, who was serving overseas in World War I at the time. Facing uncertain times upon his return, the Belmonts sold their stables; Man o’ War would go on to win the 1920 Belmont for Glen Riddle Farm. That was also the last Belmont Stakes to be run clockwise in the English tradition.

Unfortunately for Belmont, his new racetrack was closed down by a wave of anti-gambling legislation that saw horse racing shuttered across the United States – except in Maryland and Kentucky, where pari-mutuel betting was allowed to proceed. The Belmont Stakes were not run in 1911 or 1912 as the Progressive Era was in full swing, but by 1913, the moral compass toward horse racing had shifted enough to allow Belmont Park to reopen.

Back in those early days, the Belmont wasn’t necessarily the longest of the three Triple Crown races – which weren’t even considered Triple Crown races at the time, as the concept didn’t gain a foothold until the 1930s. The Belmont was run at various distances up to its arrival at Belmont Park, where it was run at a mile and three furlongs until 1925. The move to 1.5 miles was made the following year, which was also the first year the August Belmont Trophy was awarded to the winning horse.

The Golden Era of horse racing in the 1930s and the establishment of the Triple Crown elevated the Belmont Stakes to the special status it maintains to this day. The 1937 Belmont victory by War Admiral (the son of Man o’ War) was the coming of age for the Triple Crown concept; by this time, every horse lover in America was fixated on the Belmont and whether War Admiral could finish the job.

The 1940s produced four Triple Crown winners, including two of the top five horses on The Blood-Horse magazine’s list of the Top 100 US Racehorses of the 20th Century: No. 3 Citation (1948) and No. 5 Count Fleet (1943). It would take another 25 years for a horse to win the Triple Crown, and it was none other than Secretariat, the No. 2 horse on the Top 100 behind Man o’ War. Secretariat took the 1973 Belmont Stakes by an incredible 31 lengths over Twice a Prince, setting the race record for 1.5 miles of 2:24, which still stands today.

Horse racing was firmly in the national spotlight in 1977 and 1978 when Seattle Slew and Affirmed won the Belmont to complete the first back-to-back Triple Crowns in the sport’s history. However nobody has managed to do it since. Here’s the list of horses since 1978 who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness before failing to win the Belmont.

1979: Spectacular Bid (show)

1981: Pleasant Colony (show)

1987: Alysheba (fourth)
