The Katy Tigers football team has been particularly successful in recent years, winning championships in 1959, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2007 and is consistently ranked top ten nationally. Under coach Mike Johnston the Tigers beat powerhouse Southlake Carroll HS 16-15 in the 2003 5A Division II state final, handing Southlake Carroll its only loss in two years. Coach Gary Joseph, former Katy defensive coordinator, took over head coaching duties from Johnston, who left for Houston Christian High School after the 2003 season.
